Housing Green Paper

Barratt Developments’ response, 23 July 2007

Responding to the Government's Green Paper, Mark Clare, CEO of Barratt Developments, said: "We welcome the fact that Gordon Brown's Government has made housing a priority."

"The acid test of the Green Paper will be how quickly, and to what extent, it brings land to market which is suitable for development."

"Increased supply of land must then be rapidly converted into vibrant, mixed and sustainable communities. That will require changes to the planning process and the Green Paper suggestion of providing incentives to Local Authorities which perform well in this area is an interesting idea that should be rapidly progressed."

"Above all, meeting these challenges will require a new partnership approach that secures new housing while at the same time promoting better design, new ways of delivering affordability and higher environmental standards."

"It is certainly right that the use of brownfield land should continue to be the priority and it is where Barratt already builds 80 per cent of its homes."
